Option 1, option 2 or both?
1. When you get into the bathtub with them, when they get wet. 2. When you get out of the tub and they start to dry. I'm thinking of buying a pair of 1954 LVC jeans, RAW, and I saw this (from Levi's): If you plan to shrink your 501®s in the bathtub, buy your true size in the waist but two sizes bigger in length. After shrinking in the bathtub, make sure to stretch the waist back out while still wet: this method will help achieve a slimmer silhouette. I'm going to buy one size bigger in waist, W32. I'm actually 31-32. My idea is to soak with them on in the bathtub and then take them off to dry them in the sun. Am I doing the right thing or will they shrink 2 sizes as I read in other information from Levi's itself? Therefore, it is important to know when shrinkage actually starts.

My experience is the denim will begin shrinking once wet and continue shrinking until fully dry. I personally do not think it will matter if you soak them in the tub wearing them or not. Wearing them when they are still damp will help them stretch out easier than if you let them fully dry.

Thanks a lot!!! Can a hair dryer be used while wearing them to speed up drying?

If you're in a hurry I suppose you could. Blowing hot air on the denim may promote more shrink though.
