this from back in July, thought may be of interest to the gardeners here
finally made a visit to Derek Jarman's unwalled garden in desert like circumstance of Dungeness... [those are nuclear power stations in the background... churning sea is in front... shingle stretches for miles ... we went in one of hottest days of the year for socially distanced sea side jollity; mistake as no shade for miles ... ] he is known for his queer-punk films (see his 1978 Jubilee) and re-visioning of historical figures (see his films on St. Sebastian, Caravaggio and Wittgenstein) - also did pop videos for Pet Shop Boys and Throbbing Gristle... this garden is known for being a working with what you get in a strange environment (bleak sea, power stations in the background) rather than enforcing a plan... ... what I like to call a trash-zen aesthetic ... the cottage is known a Prospect Cottage, it has this extract from John Donne on the exterior wall Busy old fool, unruly Sun, Why dost thou thus, Through windows, and through curtains, call on us ? Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run ? Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide Late school-boys and sour prentices, Go tell court-huntsmen that the king will ride, Call country ants to harvest offices ; Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime, Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time. In that the world's contracted thus ; Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be To warm the world, that's done in warming us. Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere ; This bed thy center is, these walls thy sphere ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() the trailer for his film 'The Garden' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f813HEt1S9g 'pop video' with Throbbing Gristle here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoRx4pzl2o8 trailer for 'Jubilee' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU8ZB1lb-d4 |

Sounds terrific! I want one.
I couldn't imagine doing without our robot vacuum cleaner. With three dogs & three cats it's a huge help keeping loose fur under control.

A few months ago I drove by a small local park and there was a robot lawnmower cutting the grass- it was about the size of a regular electric mower sans handle and shaped like a tiny Volkswagen bug. There was no one next to it, but I’m guessing someone was watching it from nearby. I had a fantasy of being in a Freeside park courtesy of William Gibson.
Has anyone else seen this bit of the future? |

Rats get through chicken wire, 4 years ago, when California banned a certain type of poison- rats were so out of control at our place- rats found our corn, within 2 hours, our entire crop was gone. |

Mike,
No. It's ground squirrels & rabbits. They eat everything except for the gnarliest cacti.

Is it a deer problem Carl? Having a garden and fruit trees is one of those simple pleasures in life....I’m excited to be able To pick a few bowls of cherries off our trees this year. |

Coming along nicely.
We couldn't do anything like that here without a chicken wire cover from all points of attack, even underneath. Been meaning for years to build something like that for my wife.
