They seem,to me, to be a purely Tabloid Press invention.

Ever since the likes of "Reefer Madness", the press have tried to sensationalise and compartmentalise the doings of teenagers - usually missing the point entirely.

Quick question to you denimsince65, did you ever wear Lee Cooper jeans in your youth and do you know if they used selvage denim?

Pics are great. Brilliant work, IMHO. I just don't think they are of "Teddy Girls".

Answer to quick questions - Wouldn't have been seen dead in them, and so buggered if I know

I think a lot of that is obvious from the text in the link I posted above. There are 2 pictures of the quartet of girls whose photo I posted, 1 is credited as north Kensington, the other as the East End. They’re wearing the same clothes and the photos are almost certainly taken on the same day and in the same area so one label is wrong. However, I like the photos, which is why I posted.

For me, I need a little context here.

Did Russell just go out and photograph folks that he knew to be "Teddy Girls" because he wanted to pursue his "art"?

And how, in 1955, did the 27 year old Russell even know what a "Teddy Girl" was - or looked like? Did he just stop folks in the street?

Well no...

What actually happened was that Picture Post magazine commissioned him (you know - for money), as a reasonably well known photographer at the time, to illustrate an article following up a piece by that well known artibiter of taste and reasoned thinking - the Daily Express.

Here's part of what the Express had written and published in June 1954 about a girl who had recently been arrested in Southsea: “She was auburn-haired and fifteen. She wore tight-fitting trousers, a sweater, and brightly coloured socks. And she carried a small dagger. She appeared at Portsmouth Children’s Court yesterday wearing a “split” skirt, a diaphanous blouse, and high heeled sandals. The policeman said she was in a fight at Southsea with other girls. It began when two girls called her a “Teddy Girl”.”

Perfectly balanced, and completely unsalacious, as we can always expect from our esteemed national newspapers.

Just ten years later, they horrified the country with tales of "Mods & Rockers" kicking seven shades of shit out of each other in Brighton.

Was any of it true? Well, I know the Mods & Rockers thing was complete bollox. As mods, if we had scuffles with anybody, it was with other mods, and the local "greasers" (rockers) would give us a hand! But not such good press.

So, Ken Russell went down to the Mayflower youth club, and offered a few bob to any young lasses who were "Teddy Girls", to have their pictures taken. Surprisingly, there were quite a few there that night. "Ooh, see you in Canning Town, tomorrow, Mr Russell, love. And bring the money....Ooh, I think I'll borrow my grandma's hat"
