Hello—came across this chat and was hoping someone could help me out with a question I had. I have a pair of early70s 501s (I think) with redline selvedge, an underlined 6 at the back of the button, no v stick, single stitch back pockets, and the care instructions printed on the inside pocket (no care label). The back patch is pretty faded, but it says “501”, the waist and inseam measurement, and something along the lines of “care instructions inside garment.” It’s not completely butted up against the belt loop. The red tab is super destroyed and it’s impossible to tell if the “e” is big or small. With this information, is there a way to know definitively if these are big E or small e? Thx!

There isn’t a wash tag? It’s printed on the pocket bag? I’m pretty sure if it’s printed on the pocket bag- it’s a big E
And if it has a wash tag, should have a date on that- then we should be able to rule out a big E?

No wash tag, care instructions only stamped on the inside right pocket bag. Thanks for your input. I felt certain they are in the 1970-1973 time window, but was confused whether small e’s from the tail end of 1971 that hadn’t yet get switched over to care tags possibly existed.
