I’ve all but given up buying used clothing from the US, and and am much more cautious buying from certain European countries and japan, due to how many things I’ve gotten, in increasing frequency over the years, that reek of highly perfumed soaps, fabric softeners, or fabreeze type “air fresheners”.
Surely other people are bothered by this?
Most recently I bought a pair of LVC Knappaves that smelled like the air filter of a mega church transport bus for elderly ladies.
The irony of smelling overpoweringly of synthetic florals while wearing distressed miners clothing... it fills me with despair.

The solution is a simple one, I learned this washing up a scrap of denim....This denim scrap was incased In 100 plus generations of packrat doodie and urine, I washed the scrap 10 or more times, with dawn dish soap. This little scrap
Filled the whole house, with a lovely urine stench....

I set the scrap out in the sun- for maybe 4 days

100% gone the smell was, no hints of urine what so ever.

Set anything you have on that awesome roof at your place- the power of sunlight, can’t match it.

You are right on the money there- I’d read that dish soap somehow breaks down the bonds that synthetics form with fabric, and have had success reducing the stench to bearable levels by soaking overnight in a dilute solution of vinegar and unscented dish soap, then machine washing on a long cycle.

But still-

WHY?

This reminds me of one of my worst experiences thrifting.

The thrift store was beside a weird cult like cross fit gyms. People were flipping over tractor tires or some shit and maybe 15 bottles of avon cologne and perfumes from the 70s came crashing to the floor. Despitely paying, and leaving promptly i had an almost instant migraine.

As mentioned , a clothesline and sunshine work wonders to remove unwelcome odor from clothes

It's funny you bring this up. I had never bought any used clothing from Europe before, but I just bought a used LVC henley that I had wanted for quite some time.

When it arrived, the smell was extremely strong. I didn't hate it and I'm glad it was freshly washed rather than smelling like sweat, but wow it's a strong scent.

When I was a kid there were certainly fragranced products, but it seems like there has been a steady increase in the power of them which really have accelerated in the last decade or so.
I think someone from anytime before the 60s would be shocked and probably nauseated by how some people smell today who use one or more of these super scented products.
“You smell like a French whorehouse!” Is something I recall my uncles saying when someone was particularly fragrant. Our whole modern western society may smell like a French Whorehouse now...

"A tart's windowbox" was one I recall hearing back in the day.

I can hear my father saying it smelled like a French whore house.

I regret not buying the best flannel I have ever seen in a thrift store, you could smell it
From 10 feet away- it wasn’t floral- it was a mix of BO/mold and moth balls.
