At this time of year if us northerners are not hand rearing kestrels we're often found fishing for pike. A much maligned fish for the match fishermen who complain that they snaffle up 'their' catch before they even get to land it. Not me, i love pike. In recent years fisheries have culled the larger fish but as it often goes when you fuck with mother nature there has been a boom in the smaller (jack) pike population, with pike being very territorial and cannibalistic the larger fish have always kept the population in check.

Im not a fan of sitting down all day at commercial fisheries surrounded with tackle for every conceivable eventuality, using electronic bite indicators to catch fish that have been caught over and over and over again i like to be mobile and take the bait to the fish, i can fit everything that two of us need in my field bag, but hey different strokes...

Here's some of our methods... my Okuma baitcaster and Westin rod, perfect for chucking out the larger lures.

Swimbaits

Mini-soul's Shimano baitrunner and Nash rod

While we're lure fishing i also chuck out a deadbait set up.
Buffer bead, deadbait pencil, 1oz lead free weight on a run-ring, bead, trace, and herring.
I get 4x herring from the fish mongers for 39p.

Failing the pencil here's some sliders, darts ect.. for windier/choppier conditions.

You need a rod with some backbone and a good reel for deadbaiting, this is essentially my carp gear but its perfect for the job.

A slice of auntie Al's Victoria sponge cake for lunch.

Mini-souls favourite catch, mainly because it bit my thumb  Disapprove (the blood is mine).. i popped kiddo's hook out no probs and noticed some very light line poking out of its mouth, pike tend to wait for course fisherman to hook smaller fish and pounce but their fine line is broken when they gobble down the fish..  i went in for a closer look to see what we could do to help it out and it bit my thumb... gratitude eh?

A selection of de-hooking tools and a nice comfy unhooking mat (i made this mat from an old camping roll mat)
Fishing for me has always been a nice sedate pastime but as with all 'sports' there is always an element of macho posturing from certain fishermen which can be rather off putting, even though your hooking these creatures they still deserve to be treated with some respect.

I can't promise you Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper or Tom Waits in this thread...but Im hoping to hear if you've ever fished, how you got started and what methods you employed, see some fishing photo's, and hear stories of the one that got away...

Used to fish with my dad as a kid, freshwater and went on some saltwater boat trips, haven't fished in ages though. Something to add to the hobby list...

I am the worlds worst fisherman .

My limited experience involved using chicken livers to catch catfish with a buddy when I was about 12. We caught several that his grandmother fried up.

I have a friend with quite a bit of land near ‘Slick’ Oklahoma that makes his own flies and uses a tenkara (sp?) rod. I’ve joined him Once just to get out into nature a bit. It’s enjoyable to sit in relative quiet for a few hours , 14 years of church schooling killed almost any rythm I had making me an awful awful fly fisherman. My friend is pretty patient with me though and we had a nice time.

Got some new lures recently from Scandinavian brand Westin

Hand painted platypus

Shads (soft lures)

You rig them up with a 15/20g jighead with a stinger below, like this.

I might have misjudged the crowd here, i didn't expect a huge response to this thread, but i did expect more than two replies Ouch

Used to fish with my Dad and Grandpa. Never got as fancy or as skilled as Double O just a basic rod, line, and hook with some smelly power bait
Always got some nice rainbow trout though
