When im pike fishing i tend to walk miles alongside the rivers and canal's, while doing so, periodically i see heaps of junk pilled up on the towpath, anything from old BMX's, scooters, safe's, radiators, springs...ect and always assumed it was the canal trust/friend of clearing the junk out for the passing narrow boats until i read a few weeks ago about a father and son who died 'magnet fishing' in the Huddersfield canal and put 2&2 together.
Apparently its a new craze (well new to me) like underwater metal detecting where you get a super-powerful pot magnet with 100's of kg of magnetic force which you tie to a rope and cast out into waterways and haul in your artefact's and stolen loot.

Anybody tried it, seen it done or even heard of this before?

I run on the canals in London (Grand Union and Regents) a few days a week and although I regularly witness quite a few sights I’ve never seen any magnet fishing (or the results there of).

I do, however, think it’s a pastime that I could be attracted to.

Dinner sorted? Recipe at the ready?

Re: magnetic fishing. I think it's a dubious enterprise backed by a dark cabal of gill-bearing aquatic life.

Damn burglar alarm was going off at work this morning (i got a txt alert at 3:17am) i couldn't see any signs of a break in and didn't see the point in going all the way back home so i though i might as well do some work and spend the afternoon pike fishing.

The canal is looking beautiful with all the water lilies in bloom

This is what im talking about re- magnet fishing

This pike wasn't much larger than the lure, it wasn't even hooked just holding on with its teeth.
Small

Medium

Large

I'd only been fishing for 1.5hrs and i got another 'alarm' txt alert, ffs! I went back to work to  investigate and spotted a little wren flying around, luckily i had the landing net in the car but still.... it took my 5hrs+ to catch the adorable little creature, their maneuverability is just incredible, like a humming bird.

Early night tonight me thinks...Yawn!
