Go to it, boys :P

My gripes:

The New Hope references/parallels start out as charming but end up verging on "reboot" territory.

Very little explanation given about the difference between the First Order and The Empire.  They look and act basically the same, feels lazy to not give us some manner of difference, or origin story.  It's just a 1:1 switcharoo.

What's with the passionate, emotional Nazi speech?  He's talking to supposedly-emotionless drones, does the speech even effect them?  Or is it just supposed to give the audience Hitler-chills?  Effective but silly.

The intro scenes with Han/Chewie and the gangs/tentacle beasts feel silly, they mostly seem to say "nothing as happened to these two in the intervening 30 years".

Chewie looks absolutely identical to the old Chewie.  I get that wookies are supposed to live for hundreds of years, but give him a braid, some gray hairs, a new belt, ANYTHING to indicate the passage of time.

Way too much fanservice.  Overall felt like a very very cautious movie, it doesn't deviate from the original trilogy formula in any meaningful way.  The studio was probably so scared of repeating the mistakes of the Phantom Menace that they didn't really do much of anything.

I loved those sword things that had light coming out of them like a fluorescent tube, they looked great. The gold robot with a posh voice was funny too. The best bit though.. and you'll love this... Indiana Jones was in the film!!! He looked a bit old though.

Saw it on Friday - only the 2nd Star Wars movie I've seen. Clearly not an expert, but I did get to take it all in with a fresh pair of eyes.

I get what you mean about the Hitler speech, I was like "Do these guys really need to get revved up when the majority of the battle is going to be shooting a death laser from homebase"

Disney is notorious for sliding in subtle racist stereotypes into its movies - I found the scene where Finn just got into town after the crash fitting this mold... He is lying on the ground and gets tasered several times as he tries to tell them he didn't do anything.

I wasn't sure who that creepy old dude who looked like a ghost was for the First Order. Who was he supposed to be?

And the fact that anyone from the good side with the light saber could hold their own, yet alone defeat well-trained enemies was silly - they had no formal training whatsoever...

Anyhow, without knowing much of the plot at all, I still thought it was awesome

If Rey believed that Jedi were a myth, how would she know that mind tricks are possible?

Why would Chewy walk right past Leia after Han dies? They had the deepest connection to Han. This bothered me the most about the movie

Also why did they name the kid Ben? Leia only knows the name ObiWan and Han barely knew him.

This right here bugged me more than anything else in the movie. Didn't make any sense to me that the only person who tried to console Leia was the girl who had only met Han days before. There did not seem to be any feeling that anyone noticed Hans' death other than Leia and Rey.

Other than that I thought it was an enjoyable movie and a good start to the new trilogy, if a very safe retread of episode iv.

^^Totally agree with both of you on that point (and the Hitler-esque speech) - but I just tried to watch it through the eyes of an eight year old.
The boy's verdict: "Epic!!"

My verdict: Fuck, I've got to buy a Kylo Ren figure before Chrimbo!

Same here, knowing Chewy can get kind of emotional it also bothered me a lot.
But I can understand why JJ did that, he of course wanted the interaction between Leia and Rey, and a big hairy sobbing Wookie would ruin the scene ;)
And no matter how much I like the genius Carrie Fisher, she did look a lot like an old William Shatner in most of her scenes, especially when she was hugging Han.

I saw EP4 A New Hope in '77, was too young to remember it well, but vividly remember seeing EP5 the Empire strikes Back (my favourite) in the cinema. EP6 was made for kids and I want to forget EP1-3.

Considering all the pressure on JJ from studio and fans I think he did an excellent job. Of course it was a kind of a retelling of EP4 but I thought it was done well, kept me entertained throughout the whole film.

Daisy Ridley and John Boyega did very well, even if Daisy reminded me of Keira Knightley.

It made sense killing off Han, Harrison Ford is getting too old, I fall asleep when he talks in interviews...

Some people may not have liked the Darth Vader fanboy Kylo Ren (Ben Solo), but I liked his unbalanced adolescent outbursts, and that there was still some light in him, until ofcourse he skewered his dad.
Also he had a hole in is abdomen when fighting Finn and Rey, made sense he had a lot of trouble fighting them off.

And the fact that Rey suddenly tried the Jedi mind trick could be explained by the awakening/unlocking of the force by Kylo screwing with her mind. And of course she heard all the legends and stories about the Jedi's and their powers, she thought she would give it a try. I know I would have tried if I was in her situation haha...

Captain Phasma looked bad ass. She only looked bad ass, she got subdued by Finn too easily. Did like that she was played by Brianne from GOT.

I have high hopes that EP8 will be as good or better than The Empire Strikes Back as it will be directed by Rian Johnson who did the excellent Looper and the Brothers Bloom. I hope he will iift it to the next level!
