I remember coming home from school one day when I was still in high school, probably '62 or '63, and being asked if I noticed anything different in the living room. I didn't but we had gotten a new cord for the telephone, one of those curly ones. The old one was straight. At the end of 1963 we moved out to the country and had no telephone.

I have no cell phone but my wife (who does) wants me to get one. But she's the only one who would call me and I'm not sure I want to be tethered like that. On the other hand, I imagine they could be as useful as a real phone.

We don't even have a home phone, we've never had one.

When we moved into the old house I did buy a 60,s era Trimphone with a glow in the dark phosphorus dial because it looked dope!

Never wired it up tho...

LOL  00, BlueTrain,  you are the true rebels in this forum.  Must drive the guys in the white vans crazy not being able to pick up a signal...

I reckon you will both agree with me when I lament the decline in public telephone booths.  Grotty as they can be, they offer some element of freedom from constant tracking.

One last thought on why it's cool to be Stone Age.

Here's the Privacy and Information Commissioner of Nova Scotia's Naughty List:

When i was a kid the nearby phone boxes were foc if you knew the little trick... lift up the receiver and the button thingy underneath that you could press to get a dialing tone (it probably has a name which my limited knowledge doesn't stretch to) you would press it once for 1, twice for 2 and so on up to 10x for 0 and it would dial anywhere in the country for nothing...so 340121 you would press it 3 times (rest) 4 times (rest) 10 times (rest) and so forth...
We were like code-breakers, only problem was the line of lovesick teens queueing down the street

Oh, no, I'm no rebel. I'm actually very conservative. But what's this about white vans? But I also consider myself somewhat progressive. I like telephones with buttons, for instance. They enable me to dial the whole number before forgetting it.

Remember when a telephone number only had five digits--or four? And you could address an envelope "City."

My mate use to do that tapping trick on his home (dial) phone that his parents put a (physical) lock on. Anyone else remember those phone locks?
