@mrblack it's quite a fantastic feeling to be there. Plus, if you go further thru the lair, there's a passage towards a hill that will take you to see a breathtaking view of part of the forest (La Grange de Franchard).

@bartlebyyphonics that's quite a beautiful photo. I haven't heard of this photographer before, thanks for sharing that ! And I believe you can still see, or most probably feel, the same view as that on the photo by the forest near Barbizon where that photo was taken. Smile

Thread bumping...

A few weeks ago i purchased some old Sheffield City postcards from a local vintage emporium.
There was plenty from the Victorian era but i feel no sense on nolstalgia for pre-70's...

I thought it would be nice to take the same photographs again today

1979 Postcard

Today

On my mooch between locations i photographed a few other points of interest

Looking at the cars i would guess... mid 60's ?

Today

Where i'm standing would have been Castle Square roundabout or 'Oyl in' Roo'wad' (The Hole in the Road) before it got filled in when the city was blessed with the Super-Tram network

During the Sheffield blitz this end of the city was completely flattened,  For some reason German bombers mistook the shops for the steelworks, even up to the concrete 60's it was still fucked.
Along with the 'Hole in the Road' came escalators and subterranean shopping.
The underground fishtank attracted kids like a magnet which was a breif restpite before you was dragged around C&A.

Down to the last remnants of the outdoor markets

Sheffield has a poverty gap like no other, highlighted here in A Tale of Two Cities: The Sheffield Project
In the decade since the survey.. like most poverty gaps, its only got wider...much wider.
^Its a 111pg pdf so click here for the condensed version

Bedroom furniture...slightly soiled matress anyone?

Get you're apples...four for a pound!!

Waingate 1960

Today

You might remember that^ old court house from the bottom of  this page.

This is the only part in the city where you can still hear a proper Sheffield accent, sadly its also the most impoverished.

I would guess, the late 70's ?

Today,
I struggled to find the exact vantage point, Park Hill is behind me, slightly to my right

In the background^ you will notice that the old town hall extension (Egg Box) has gone, folks fucking hated it, i thought it was alright.
Victorian town hall on the left, 70's extension (Egg Box) on the right.
Like Castle Lemongrab
On the way home i passed this multi-storey carpark, affectionately known as the 'Cheesegrater'

....and back home

Thanks Neal, I always enjoy these posts, even though it is a trip down an unknown memory lane (for me).

Holy crap! When did the alien cube land on and consume Henderson's Relish?

Was there a little trail of spicy, fruity sauce on the sidewalk?

I, for one, hope our alien overlords remain vegan.

Don't fret Henderson's is still there, it's sacred with the cultural signinificance of Christ the Redeemer

Good. So any slurping sounds that might escape the rubber house are purely artistic in nature. That's a great comfort.

(Which may be part of the Aliens' game plan. Just saying.)

Subsequently edited to ensure the word "artist" is co-joined with "ic". No judgement, though.
