I will start with the beginning of the day on sunday....when Mark, Kevin, Mike and i woke up early and traveled across the Bay Bridge to Oakland. we met up at a buddist temple and followed Roy and Molly to petes coffee...everyone gathered around the street corner in the freezing wind and chatted(it was sooooo cold) Mike and Roy talked about skateboarding in their earlier years......... when the buddist temple opened we went back and had the most amazing thai breakfast. we all sat at the long picnic benches provided and shivered in the scattered sunlight as we devoured the hot curries and soups. Roy and Mike discovered they had a bottle hunting friend in common in oakland and Roy talked about how this guy digs up outhouses in various towns in the bay area..................

we parked in his studio parking lot, the area was an industrial area with old brick buildings

This was the first time we had been to his studio so I was very curious to see what it was like......he opened the first outerdoor and that opened up into a large woodworking shop, we walked through that and then came to a sliding white door........

the workshop up next...............

When I entered the space, I was taken by the amount of light, even on a rainy day that poured through the large opaque industrial windows...to my left in a cabinet was stacks of pants he had just completed and were ready to ship out.........

I asked about how long it takes him to make these and if I remember correctly he said it varies but on average 8 pairs a day as long as all the elements of the pants are pulled together ahead of time and he isn't interrupted a lot by phone calls and such.......

Mark and Roy talked about the new run of jeans.............and Roy showed us how the pockets were all lined......they were beautiful.

more up next.........

Everyone settled in and started looking at michaels box of denim...........

Michael's wearing his Roy competition jeans and a jacket that was a gift from Mark

Kevin and michael above

I took the oppurtunity to walk around and absorb some of the details of the space........the more I looked the more I realized that I was observing an authentic workshop, just like my brothers copperworks shop and my grandpa's sheet metal shop, all had similar qualities.......similar smells and feels. all over the floor was the cotton remnants of the cutting and trimming needed to create a pair of pants just like the metal shards in grandpas workshop........these are the kind of spaces America had more of prior to shipping all the labor overseas..........

Molly was great to talk to, we realized she grew up not far from my house in Orange County....she works at Levi's right now....we had fun joking about the housewifes of orange county.....

as we left Roy made us our own personalized handkerchiefs, and we got to see and hear some of the machines in actions.......

great people, great space, great jeans............
I think we are seeing the old saying "do one thing and do it well" in action here in Oakland.....
