I haven't seen any conversation here about Dawson Denim, Kelly Dawson and Scott Ogden making jeans and British style workwear on the south coast of England. I've been lucky to try nearly every style and there's quite a lot of variation in designs. I think we have to say that the very wide hem openings are a signature style. The quality of construction reminds me of Roy and Ooe---attention to every detail and not a reproduction but a clear nod to naval heritage. Now if I can get my hands on a Pvt.White Bridge Coat that would tie it up nicely for a winter look. Anyway, I truly love Dawson's work, wish them great success, and am interested to know what others have to say. ------------- "If you had heard him speak of wombats..it would have brought tears to your eyes..." |

| I've looked at their stuff online. It seems they're doing something a bit different from most, wider fits, etc. I'm originally from the South coast of England btw. |

Yeah, They started by doing Denim aprons way back in 2012 or something. Since then they have gradually building their range. I haven't owned any of their stuff but it looks good. ...oh the memories of Southern Coast of England circa 1980. Wearing Creepers and buying a Flying Saucers album from a small record store in Worthing... ------------- Too much Denim - too little time... |

Kelly Dawson has done most of the sewing on my jeans: they all come numbered and signed. I've been laying down the Dawsons for quality comparison next to Roy and Ooe, who along with Conners Sewing Factory, I regard the gold standards for quality sewing. Sometimes we buy denim for the fabric (ahh, PBJ, you never fail to disappoint with the loom) or the reproduction quality (like that wonderful way TCB lets in the "mistakes" of yore). With Dawson the emphasis is on both obsessive quality in production and the distinctive design. Their "regular fit" is like most people's straight on the looser side. Their slim fit is much like a slim taper that's familiar across many brands. But it's in the wide and wide taper that their design genius comes through. It looks like you are a deck hand in the RN circa WWI, wearing the fabled Class II uniform pant, except it's a fantastic Japanese denim. Further keys to sartorial success: wear white socks, black shoes, cuff them up a bit, and let your straight or tapered very wide look ramble on. They were great! saw 'em a couple or three times over the years, last time being at Viva Las Vegas. After Colin Grogan died someone put up a link to a film of them playing at a pub in the 70s. It was an eye opener. They were full of fire & life back then. Wished I'd been old enough to experience them in that era.

Kelly & Scott are very lovely people. My wife bought me one of their aprons a couple of years back and the only negative I have is that it’s too good to wear/get dirty. It’s a thing of beauty! I saw crazy Cavan quite a few times. Although I was a young rockabilly, they were still looked upon with respect, if not a little amusement sometimes. ------------- www.sidewinderapparel.co.uk |

Right. Same thing with my crowd. In general we thought the teds & their bands were dinosaurs but as you've said, there was at least a grudging respect for Cavan.
