I think most denimbros & frequenters of Stylefourm & sufu are familiar with http://www.hollowsleather.com" rel="nofollow - Hollows Leather . Nicholas, a resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been crafting leather belts, wallets, card cases, bracelets and other accessories since 2008.
I suspect some bros will have nicely broken-in examples of his work- let's see 'em!

I wish I could tell you when that belt chromexcel will arrive, but time moves at a different speed inside that particular tannery than it does in the rest of the world.

Thanks for making this thread mr. randal, I'm happy to answer any questions folks might have.

I did an interview with Denimhunters a while back that might be a good read if anyone wants to know a bit about me and my operation:

Hollows, how about a teaser for what you might have coming up for spring availability?

Posted By: hollows
Date Posted: 04 Mar 2013 at 3:16pm
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

Right now the top 3 things that I want to get on to the web store are the Field Wallet, which some are familiar with:

A pencil case (of which I've only made one so far, for myself):

And some camera straps:

At some point I want to finalize the suspender/brace design and get these available as well, but there's a lot of variables and I'm not convinced that I've figured out the best way to do it yet, so these may take a bit longer:

Plus restocking the stuff that's out right now, including the chromexcel belts (whenever that leather arrives), and offering the premium belt in a single-prong version as well.  I really like the double prong buckles myself, but I think they're a bit much for some people.

Long term I'm hoping to take some metalcraft classes so I can get some really unique silver and brass hardware going.

I have a few other things up my sleeve, but some of that will have to stay secret a while longer.  Some collaboration with other makers and maybe some non-leather stuff on the way! Woohoo.

All of the above items are perfect!  Love the Field Notes Wallet.  Thats a great idea.

I looked at your site and you said the buckles are from Japan.  Is all of your hardware from Japan?  Is it superior to the typical hardware you find more readily available?

-------------
Sell me your Mister Freedom stuff. :)

Not all of my hardware is from Japan, but the hooks on the reins and bracelets and the "premium" buckles are.

The finish on the Japanese stuff is not polished but not coated in fake "antique", it's more of a raw appearance, which I like a lot.  There is less effort taken to make the metal look uniform, so it's more interesting to look at right off the bat.

The buckles are particularly nice, they're shaped with thicker leather in mind, which makes a big difference in minimizing the "buckle bulge" that you can get with heavy belts sometimes.  Teardrop holes also help with that.

Hollows, do you maintain a wait list for items in production, or is it first come first serve when you release batches?

Lately I've been doing first come first serve when custom ordering is open and accepting projects until the wait time gets to around 8 weeks, then closing ordering, working on those projects, restocking the web store and prepping new items, then starting over again with more custom orders.

I really have no idea what the best method would be for both myself and customers, so I sometimes experiment with new methods.  I've avoided having a longer term wait list because past that 8 week mark it gets really hard to predict how long things will take, especially if I end up having to wait on a tannery or run into hardware supply issues.  I'm a much better leatherworker than businessman, so limiting the scale of the business-y side of things is pretty important to keep the whole Hollows machine running smoothly.  If ordering is always open, I'll end up spending more time on emails than actually making stuff.

I would love feedback from folks who have (or currently are) waiting for custom availability on how I could improve the experience.  I'm sure that it can be frustrating.

I've considered choosing 4 specific dates throughout the year to open for custom projects (then closing when the work queue feels full), would that be better?

Or if anyone knows of another scheme that seems to be working for another custom maker, that could be hugely helpful.  Best part about being a one-man (plus genius wife) operation is that we can change things up at any time if we find a better way.

Speaking from experience with another one man leather operation, it sucks when you've been waiting for an item for over 8 weeks, yet keep reading twitter/tumblr updates about new projects he's designing or making and it's February and you still haven't revived your simple snap bracelet that you purchased during a Black Friday sale as a Christmas gift for a loved one.

Run on sentence rant over.

I like that your honest about your ability to get out the orders.

I'm pretty terrified of becoming one of those guys.

Before I did leather I was a bicycle mechanic and nearly pursued frame building.  My frame building hero went down in flames for failing to deliver on a dozen or so projects that he took money for, it had a big impact on me, because I idolized the dude and he screwed things up so badly, I think that's a big part of why I prefer to take small bites and avoid growing too much.

^good news!

Hollows, I was going to make a comment about one of the suspender pictures you posted in the RS contest thread, and realized I don't know any of the terminology well enough to say what I wanted.
Are there specific (or do you use personal shorthand) names for the various parts of a pair of suspenders?
For example, the tabs that connect button attachments to the leather axial pieces, the elastic band that connects the lower back juncture to the button juncture in Y suspenders...
see what I mean?

Hah, there probably are some specific terms, but I have no idea what they are.

I work with a lot of thingies and doodads.  Most of the hardware bits have proper names, but if the other bits do, I don't know them.

Very doubtful.  These take so much time and leather that they have to be REALLY expensive just to break even.  Projects this size are almost silly to hand-stitch, but it's all I've got.

Maybe if I get a machine at some point down the road to cut down the time/cost, but until then they'll just be a once or twice a year thing for me, I think.

I like making them (and beholding the finish product briefly before sending them to a new home), but I don't like how they tend to throw a wrench in my work flow by taking up so much time.

I definitely dig black-on-black (really not a fan of silver buckle on black belt for some reason), but my strong preference would be for the buckle to be something other than a roller, and matte!

Posted By: hollows
Date Posted: 18 Apr 2013 at 1:47pm
Black buckles are not too common, I found these black rollers cheap and I've been sitting on them for a while now, seemed like black/black was the best use for them.

The attachment hardware on that one is the same gunmetal chicago screws that I use with the gunmetal center-bar buckle on the right here:

I bought a single garrison belt in russet tan from Nick a month ago. It doesn't matter that I orderd just before the Labour Day sale because I'm happy that he gets more money from my purchase, not  bummed that I could have saved $10.

Can't do it any more photographic justice with my iPhone than he already has on his website, so I'll spare the photos. But I can say quality and craftsmanship are ace - edges are burnished nicely, width is perfect for the buckle, leather has wonderful character. The size 34 was perfect for me, a 32" waist (size 31 in most of my denim), fitting into the middle notch. My only criticism is that the stitching could be a little neater - it seems to cut a little deep into the face of the leather.

I believe he referred to the brass garrison buckles he sources as his grail, and I echo the sentiment. Other garrisons I looked at were too angular, too shiny, oversized, etc. I love the shape of this buckle and the tone it makes, jingling every time I put it on in the morning. I'm also really liking the lower profile of this compared to my early model Tanner standard belt with snap buttons. (To its credit, I like the fatter profile of the Tanner for carrying boxes because I can rest the load on the buckle/hips.)

I'm probably due for a new wallet soon, and when I'm ready I know just the guy to make it!

Wow mr. Hollows!
By far one of the nicest cow flesh items you have ever done.

Beautiful work Hollow! I can see why you are so proud of it. I also have the same brass pen from Karas Kustoms. Love it.

That's a really nice work (or pleasure) environment you have there hollows, I can almost smell the leather, So many look contrived.  The shoulder bag looks splendid! do they ever hit the site or are they purely mto?

Thanks Double0.  Those bags will probably never be "stocked" on the site.  I hope to put a single bag up there from time to time in the future, but I can't see myself ever making multiple of the same bag, just too much time goes into each one.

@Teezero, the suspender launch is getting closer, I'm hoping to have a small batch ready for Black Friday.
