Subject: VINTAGE LVC CATALOGS

You can track the investment Levi's has had in their LVC division through the care they spend on their catalogs of offerings.

At the inception of LVC US there was a careful selection of classic pieces, all produced at the Valencia street factory, accompanied by a nice 6 x 4"ish catalog showing original items that stayed the same for a number of years.

When LVC got broader and funkier, (2002ish, with a gradual scale up from 1999) with washes and quirkily reproduced customized items from their archive, they released color hang-tag catalogs, about 3 x 4", for each season and made large format look books which were for the trade only.

Lvc languished for a while around 2007, with a reduced number of items and a dimmed vision, and the catalogs were poorly produced hang tabs for a few years. I think the look books stopped around this period as well.

When money and interest poured back into LVC from headquarters around 2009, offerings and design went through the roof and glossy large format look books began to be produced again, with the idea of scaling them up and releasing them to the public. This did happen, and culminated in hard bound look books that were sold or given out at events.

Over the last season or two there have been warning signs that LVC is being scaled back again and may even cease to exist. Seems like a good time to dust of the old jpegs and take a look back at LVC in its silver and golden years

I'm not sure about my chronology here, so anyone who sees an error, please speak up.

LVC first started happening in a small way with Levi's Japan, who started reproducing a few models of 501s (including the 1955) and a couple of denim jackets (506, 557, 505) in the early-mid '80s, following the lead of the Japanese company Evis. Levi's US started making a few repro-like models of the 501 and the 506 & 507 jackets in the late '80s, but with small 'e' tags and hit or miss denim. LVC became a more serious project around 1996. For the first three years they made a very limited range of repro denim garments.

Here, page by page, is the original catalog. These images may be courtesy of Dr_Heech- I don't recall for sure.

LVC 1996-1998

***NOTE- the 1937 model is actually a reproduction of a 1937 501. The 201 line was a cheaper version of items dating back back to the... 1890-1920s? (Sansome, is this correct?)

I believe this was a simple error that happened during design to manufacture transition that didn't get corrected for whatever reason. Ive heard a story that LVC purposefully misnamed the 1937 as a 201 to make it appear older- this doesn't seem entirely logical, as the date is given as 1937 and no bones about that.

LVC 1999-2000

In 1999 LVC produced a larger collection with new 501 models and in 2000 their first non-denim items appeared. So far as I can find, there don't seem to have been any catalogs released from 1999 to 2001, so i have begun to reconstruct the releases for these years as best I can. If anyone has corrections or additional information for these years, please post it in this thread or PM me.
I haven't been able to trace who was at the top creative helm of LVC at this time, but pattern cutter Daniel DiSanto was responsible for coming up with the year model and patterns for the expanded jean range at this time. An interview with him is available on http://www.denimbro.com/daniel-disanto_topic4254.html" rel="nofollow - denimbro here .

LVC 1999-2000- Several new 501 models- the 1873, 1890, 1933, 1944 & 1947 and the '20s 201 appeared this year (some of the new models began appearing in late 1998).

LVC 2000-2001

These are compilations and extrapolations of my own- I'm sure there are errors in release time here.

LVC S/S 2002

I believe this was the first season LVC produced small hang-tag catalogs that accompanied each garment. These photos are courtesy of Dr_Heech:

The Bonneville jacket here is interesting- an unlined cowhide with good distressing.
This collection really  starts to showcase the innovative distressing techniques of http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/06/fashion/mens-style/levis-denim-lab-san-francisco.html" rel="nofollow - Bart Sights , who along with his father were pioneers in the field of artificially aging denim. The 'Death Valley' 1890 is the first of his truly iconic washes for LVC.

LVC F/W 2002

The 'Rough N Ready' and 'Bird of Prey' are stunning items, best of the LVC jackets, and mark the beginning of LVC's collaboration with Aero Leather of Scotland. The R'n'R is heavy horse-hide, subtly distressed. The BOP, marketed as a woman's jacket, is the same basic model but in darker steerhide, cut slightly more narrow in the waist and with sharper collar points. Works quite well as a mans jacket, and in fact looks more like the archived mens leather jacket at Levi's headquarters that these two were based on than does the R'n'R.

The LVC x Aero 'Rough & Ready' (L) and the vintage jacket it was based on in the Levi's archive.

LVC x Aero  'Bird of Prey' jacket.

LVC S/S 2003:

The '30s dude ranch shirt (actually a plaid shorthorn shirt from Levi's main line) is very interesting, utilizing a printed (not woven) plaid and featuring elaborate customized embroidery. The 'Scorched Up' jacket is another collaboration between Aero Leather Clothing from the UK and LVC. This is a loose reproduction of the East West Musical Instruments 'Barnstormer' jacket, lacking the original's side and lower pocket straps. The 1915 501 'Celebration' jean, widely sought after by collectors, was distress by Bart Sights and is one of the most beautiful and convincing washes produced by LVC.

LVC F/W 2003

The 1901 'Indigo Immortal' and the 1937 'Rail Rider', two of the last Bart Sights washes, are outstanding. The 'Blue Black' leather jacket and its' female counterpoint, the 'Blue Blush' have become iconic, representing along with the previous seasons 'Rough and Ready' and 'Bird of Prey' the apex of LVCs partnership with Aero Leather. The 'Blue Black' was made from a blue backed Buffalo hide in a cropped '30s style. LVC seems to have infected Aero during this time with its inability to size properly. The 'Blue Black' is horribly undersized, with the large being roughly an actual 38. The '30s climate-sealed jacket makes its first appearance this season.

Last Chance Climate-Sealed jacket.

LVC x Aero 'Blue Black' jacket.

LVC S/S 2004

LVC F/W 2004

The Spring Bottom pants from this season are incredible. LVC had a batch of very lightweight Japanese denim (? seems more like a light cotton twill than denim, but what do I know) made to match the faded, slightly greenish natural indigo tint of a pair of famous Spring Bottoms in the Levi's archive (this same material was later used on the 1910 pleated front jacket and the '50s 'Lighter Blues' pants). This Spring Bottom repro was lovingly crafted, with tan duck and red-striped cotton interior detailing and gold-look hardware. LVC later released a second, much inferior, batch of SB pants in 2010, perhaps in an effort to use up the remaining fabric, which featured simpler detailing, dull hardware, and even lacked the fabric connecting the split back waistband.
The Aero 'Two Tone' leather jacket, in a oxblood-brown horsehide, is a fantastic piece.

I believe the #2 series went into the 1930's?

^The 201 line was manufactured up until 1942 (l've even seen images of an early WW2 s213 jacket so it's possible there may have been a simplified 201 jean too?)

Thanks Doc- there must be some interesting history there with the need for simplified WWII production and the end of the 201 line?

BTW are these your images? I kind of remembering photographing the catalog myself, but I don’t really recall, as it’s been (shockingly) over 10 years since we posted the old LVC catalog thread.

You know, it's been so long that l'm not entirely sure. Although tbh it doesn't matter (to me at least).
Good to see them all again. Still have all my lvc catalogues somewhere.

LVC S/S 2005

Why, yes, that is 3 catalogs all for S/S 2005! ShortyLong suggests that LVC was making separate US and European lines for a minute. The third booklet (images provided by skyrunner, thanks!) I have no idea where that fits in.

LVC S/S 2011

After 2008 LVC discontinued their hang tag booklet catalogs. I'm not sure if they had an alternative in mind from the start, but in 2011 someone from LVC gave me a look book and asked me to photograph it and post it to sufu as an experiment.
This isn't noticeably different from look books that had been in production since at least 2003, but they had been forbidden to be given out to the public or posted online before now.
The experiment seemed to go well, as a series of hardbound, expanded content look books with bigger budgets and seriously good photography started emerging in 2012.

LVC F/W 2011

Line sheets, composed of simple drawings or photos of clothing items available in each collection, are sent out to retailers to facilitate ordering. LVC has always had some form of line sheets, but made the publicly available for a few seasons around this time.

Some standout pieces from this collection are:

The 1874 hunting coat is a model previously produced by LVC Japan based on a vintage riveted canvas jacket which may or may not have been originally produced by Levi's.

The 1874 pantaloons are based on a rather fanciful illustration accompanying an early Levi's rivet patent.

The striped 1880s henley is based on the shirt worn by a Native American, in a very early photograph, with a pair of early Levi's.

I have it, I had 2 copies that survived the book burning( No Joke)
2013 was the season that LVC was making a reproduction of my 1873 Levi’s
The head designer almost got canned, the books were destroyed, but something
Like 200 books got sent out before the s@it hit the fan.
I can post my 2013 look book.

I also have an extra copy that I’ll let go for a small fee
I can also ask my friend to send me pics of the book that
Didn’t get destroyed.

I haven’t thought about this stuff in ages, but for some reason I’m thinking that for this particular season LVC produced two separate collections...one for the US market and one for the rest of the world. Someone else might be able to speak more definitively on this.

^ I think you’re right shorty- I was always confused about the catalog order here and thought that was a mistake on the date, but recently found another catalog for an adjacent year that seems to be an alternate to the US one.
So there were three active LVC lines for it seems like a year or two- LVC Europe, LVC US, LVC Japan all seemed to overlap around 2005-2005...

I just finished photographing and emailing myself 128 pages of the 2013 look book.
I found my special edition- the one that slipped past the book burning party.
I’ll have it posted in an hour or so.

3 separate catalogs and two formats for S/S ‘05- I guess LVC was feeling schizophrenic that year?

LVC SS2020

Starting with this season, LVC outsourced all of its raw denim construction to Bulgaria (I think the rigid 505 may still be made in Turkey?), and resourced its denim from Japanese mill Kaihara, replacing Cone as a supplier.

I know- I'm finding a lot of items this season charming too- especially after the dinginess of last season.
The flag shirt & shorthorn look great, and I spy in that first image the back of a white Climate-Sealed jacket with muticolored embroidery- haven't seen that materialize anywhere for sale...

Its really good that this collection has some appealing cut & sews- I'm not really interested in the Made in Bulgaria denim offerings at all...

We had a riveted pair of pants that were found in a 1874 trash dump, these pants were constructed like Levi’s, but they
Had blank rivets and were made of light weight 2x1 denim. It took almost 15 years to find evidence, that would then
Back up what we always thought was true about what a 1873 pair of Levi’s looked like- We found two pieces, first was a
Piece of duck Levi, it had blank rivets ( usually Levi rivets are stamped - pat May 1873 LS &Co S.F) This duck piece luckily
Had branded Levi Strauss suspenders buttons...so proof that 1873-74 Levi’s had blank rivets. The second piece we found was a waistband Levi piece, with branded buttons and branded rivets, most important, this piece was made of light weight
2x1 denim....During the 1870’s, most makers at that time were making 2x1 denim pants- now we had proof that Levi was making them too.

We found these Levi pieces in 2011, we finally had enough evidence to back up what we thought all along, the 2x1 denim pant, with blank rivets and no arcs on the back pocket, was a Levi pant....Now this goes against What was coming out of the Levi Archives then and now. Starting in 2012, our friends at LVC, wanted to make our 1873 2x1 Levi pants, so without checking with the Levi archives first...LVC proceeded to start making our pants, they had thousands of yards of special denim, milled in Japan- then they made the look books with the story of how they were found....the look books were finished and printed, the fabric was made, and sample pants were made.

At this point- the project was almost done, then the Archive finds out about the project ( I assume the Levi Lawyers catch wind of the project?) This is where things go south- the head designer gets called into a meeting, his job was on the line,
The project was halted, the look books were destroyed ( but this was after at least 200 books made it out to Europe)
Head designer keeps his job- so that’s most of the story- in 2013 we had a meeting with the head of the Levi Archives- Mr
Randal- Nonriveted and I, plus a few Levi employees met to discuss our 1873 Levi’s, we brought the pants for the head of the archives to look at....The meeting was supposed to be just me and Lynn ( head of the archives) Lynn and I had different opinions on Levi history- there was no F-ing way I was going to meet alone with her.....so I brought some friends.

Warehouse copied that detail early on, my Japanese dealer friend at the time, he brought a warehouse guy over ( had no idea who he was at the time) The warehouse guy took detailed photos of our 1873 Levi’s, and that watch pocket- almost at the top of the waistband was incorporated into...I believe the whiskey cats IIRC.... Don’t know if I ever told this story- same visit- warehouse guy wanted to try chewing tobacco for the first time( he never had tobacco before) My Japanese dealer friend laughed- he knew what was about to happen. I opened the can- warehouse guy pinched a good amount, he started
To put in on his tongue- we both said NO No- I showed him, where to put it, he did, he spit once....then he stumbled, then he went over to the bushes and spit it out of his mouth, then he started coughing and came so close to puking....four years later I met him again in Japan....we both gave a big smile- it was then when I knew who he was.... That watch pocket is a sum bitch to get things in and out of.

Have to say that's a pretty great magazine.
I don't know much about the 70's, but the advertising and everything seems to be dead on.
Really like the "I'm from planet Levi's, take me to your closet" bit.

That was an impressive marketing campaign around that seasons launch. Levis also had a “radio station” website that would stream music with Disk Jockey riffing in between sets.

Great job on the ads for sure, the party shots reminded me of the staged party shots I’ve seen in clutch magazine....If your at a Rising Sun party- many of times I’ve seen the Japanese photo shoots- the action and excitement of the party- doesn’t match the picture.

2008 heading back to camp from a 10 hour dig ,exhausted, going about 35 mph, no helmet, I looked back to see where my father-in-law was, I was so tired- when i looked back...I took my left hand off the motorcycle grip and at the same time while looking back, I turned the bars with my right hand to the left- the split second, when my face was hitting the front tire- then the ground...In a split second
I thought (I can't believe this is happening) It only takes a fraction of a second to go over the bars and slam your face into the ground going 35mph-

That was a shit day wearing a pair of Levi's

That was an incredible advertising campaign, and the orange tab MIA line was a bit of genius- would’ve been interesting to see where that went if Levi’s upper management hadn’t become so typically bottom-line and vision lacking abruptly thereafter.
Does anyone remember- there was a thread here about a secret giveaway to denimbro members of a new model from a major producer- I think everyone had figured out it was LVC pretty quickly, right? They came to me with the idea, it was to be 50 pairs and the new 551zxx if I recall correctly. After I had announced it and started signing people up they suddenly changed their mind and, after multiple attempts to get an update, I was informed that upper management had “decided to go a different direction”. I was lucky to get 3-4 pairs to give away on the forum after some complaining.
I think that was the same time they started pulling support from LVC’s pr, reducing offerings, closed the LVC flagship store. A long steady decline to this point.

Maurizio spells it out in the 2011 interview he did, in- Inventory magazine- I’ll post it later- when the new CEO
Came on, he was giving LVC 2-3 years to make its way- to be profitable, 2014 was the beginning of LVC being
Dismantled....starting in 2016-2017? It was only 1 person, a year later they were given 1 assistant.
Now with company going public- It’s over Johnny

For me, LVC became terminal when they closed the Valencia St. factory, and it finally expired with the closure of Cone’s White Oak plant. I think the last LVC piece I purchased was the 1915 jeans when they were first released. I just couldn’t get over the lack in quality of details like the buttons and pocket bags. I’m honestly shocked it’s lasted this long.

It really is sad, isn’t it? LVC could have been the worlds preeminent repro maker. All that history and early vision squandered in the quest for corporate profit.

I'm not really sure if this 2013 flame belt ever went into production? I had 3 at one time, found this one today in the shed, i believe I have one more if anyone is interested in one, I don't see needing more than 1- Here it is in the 2013 look book

That was and continues to be my favorite LVC collection. I love the SoCal hotrod stuff, I still own 3 of the shirts and wear them regularly, the skull, shirt, the pink eye ball shirt and the blue button up with the ringed planets on it.
Come to think of it, I bought one of the shorthorns from Mr Randal after he moved on from it too. The black and yellow one. I might have even owned the pink and blue shorthorn from that season too

If that flame belt is anywhere around a 32” waist I’d love to have it mike, you know, for posterity’s sake.

where did you get the space shirt? I've been looking forever but only saw a couple xtra-smalls floating around.

Does anyone know anything similar available?

A seller on eBay had several and I snagged one. It’s a small, but fits big, I’m usually a medium in LVC stuff. I need to thin out my closet and was thinking of selling it. DM if you’re interested.

When I get time, I can screen shot the images- then host them myself....and put them in the proper place.

First image is interesting, the bunk house jeans- since then, they were stolen a few years back....it was a smash
And dash- the display case was broken, in the Levi lobby- and the jeans were never recovered.

Hey,

here are some examples from the book. I took some sites with the most ionic items from this season, like the Black Blue Leather Jacket. The whole book got nearly 70 sites.
Never seen another one of this book, until I got it, I thought in this era only the items got the small hang tags with catalogs.

Sorry, if it's not the right way to post picutres here. I'm not really firm with it. :)

Thank you for this post! I signed up for the forum as soon as I saw it.

I remember buying a pair of LVC 501s back when eBay was young and it broke my spirit. If I recall correctly, the sizing on the jeans was not the actual size of the jeans because all the jeans were pre-shrunk; so a 32 would be more like a 29 with a 27 thigh.

I miss old, unreasonable LVC.

Is there anyway we can zip all of these files? I'm paranoid they might go down and never come back one day when I'm in the mood for some LVC nostalgia.

Speaking of nostalgia -does anybody know where I can look at old Nudie booklets from the 00s?

Again, Thanks for posting these!
