Engineer boots please! Might not be many based on the date ranges, but you might be able to help pin down when they first start to appear.

I care for the shirt in the middle. The shirt on the far left, we found something similar to this at a 1940's-50's Talc mine

I notice RRL made a lined jean this season. I had some interest in the item but the fact that they refuse to give measurements kept me from buying.

I wonder if the artwork for the men's boots and shoes in those early Sears catalogs was distorted, because some of them look bizarre. But they sure had a huge variety. I also note that tennis shoes have been around for a really long time and that Romeo shoes are still available almost unchanged. One of my uncles always wore Romeo shoes around the house. When we went camping, he wore those thick canvas shoes with a thick sole (not a tennis shoe) that no longer seem to be available. Didn't see any of them in any of the catalog illustrations. Remember "putter pants" from Sears?

So-called putter pants were simple, lightweight pants that a man might wear around the house on weekends. They had an elastic waist and, I think, patch pockets on the front. I don't know it that was the catalog name or not or if they were exclusively Sears but probably not. Decidedly a 1950s thing, just like pipe smoking, tail fins and cocktails.

I’m still on the hunt for a good shawl collar shaker knit sweater like those Sansome; there are various versions out there but they either miss the mark or they’re made in China.

I either have 1860-1900 knowledge or 1970-1990’s stuff- are some of those last sweaters I posted, the ones your talking about?

Yep, they were most prevalent in the 1910s and 1920s and saw some action in the ‘30s:

On the right here, 1920s:

The wool thread is so thick & heavy on the old ones. I've yet to see a repro match that. Of course there are some I haven't seen in person.

Yep, it has to be the right, thick guage of wool, as well as having the correct dimensions on the collar, the right button placement, and also sleeves that are a touch long for folding back.
The overall best repro I've seen, off the top of my head, is the Phigvel one, but it's usually made in China:

That is a good look, and easy for a good number of people to pull off, a friend of mine has what looks to be a salesman sample- one from the 20’s I believe, My friend was thinking about reproducing the sweater in Japan....Not positive if it’s still going to happen, but if it does, what a great looking sweater it is.

Those washable canvas shoes illustrated on page 399 of the Sears catalog posted on 1/24 were exactly what I was referring to about the shoes one of my uncles wore sometimes. Don't remember seeing anyone else wear them but they were basically like sneakers. This all made me wonder if anyone here wears boots or shoes with leather soles?

Hmm - they certainly used to be made in the UK, but the wording seems to have changed to them just being made of 100% british wool, which means they're not anymore. Disappointing.

I recently picked up a jumper from Inis Meain, who definitely still make their stuff in Ireland - I've been coveting their Pub Jacket, which is in the same ballpark too (linen rather than wool tho)

Probably not a big enough market for them anymore, To warrant making them in the UK...I would imagine Your still producing plenty of wool, I traveled through your country in 99, I remember seeing plenty of wool.

I dunno, there seems to be a growing market for UK made stuff. A number of new brands sprung up in recent years, and still a reasonable number of manufacturers who'd make them for them (They previously had jackets made by a place in Bolton which still makes jackets...)

I think this covid circus, will result in some domestic production making a small comeback, how long this will last is anyone’s guess- some thrift stores are opening back up today, In the last week, I’m finally feeling the affects....so we’re Going down to rent a fast car ( cuz that’s fun to do sometimes) and I’m going on the hunt.

My older brother has the same cardigan, and he's not even vaguely into workwear - North Sea Clothing has plenty of fans here, way outside the workwear dudes.

Doesn’t surprise me- you see it ever so often here, funny thing, the most random comments, bank tellers People in the grocery store, I got ( I like your shirt from over 30 people) It was the red and white Henley from LVC, a 1880’s reproduction from one of our mining trips. In second place, the most compliments went to a reversible ghost-skater hoodie I used to wear years ago.
Killer b- I might be wrong, but that cardigan look seems very English to me?

It's always hard to judge the prices from something a hundred years ago but average wages for ordinary hourly workers in the early 20s varied from $35 to $45 a week (48 hour weeks) for union employees. More for foremen and the like and probably a lot less for non-union workers and for those who received compensation in the form of housing and meals (loggers, for instance). But except, I guess, for union fees, there were no deductions at all. Wages also varied by region. They weren't much higher when I was born in 1946. Currently, I'd say that average hourly wages are on the low side, compared to prices. I might note that many of those boot styles were still available in 1970.
