They're just nicer objects I think. And because they're mostly made in small batches, you can personalise them in a way which isn't possible with bigger runs (I know this is possible with CD-Rs, but I reckon CD-Rs just feel a bit shit and disposable to most people's minds now).

I lino print the covers for my releases by hand, so each tape is unique. Most other people in the tape scene do something similar - so the listeners have a relationship with the label, and with the artist, that you don't have with music bought from HMV or streamed from spotify.

It's not much different from getting your jeans made by a dude in japan rather than buying from Gap IMO...

(Speaking of dudes in Japan, this guy stocks some of our releases - check out his instagram to get an idea of the range of colours and designs the scene produces)

It sounds like CD-Rs, despite being fully customisable (insert covers can be done by hand, just like tapes) more accessible (more people probably have access to a CD player than a tape deck), possibly even cheaper than tapes and arguably better quality, they are simply not as hipster friendly as tapes. My advice is to stock up on CD-Rs now and give it another 20 years - you’ll be quids in!

The uber-hipsters are already on it. Tapes are practically mainstream now.

My money is on 8-track next.

Will be interesting to see who wins the battle between Laserdisc and Betamax. If anyone gets a tip, send me a Telex.

The Melvins did an 8-track a couple years ago. The cartridge cases were recycled (up-cycled?) and they found someone who could load them with new tape. I hemmed and hawed just long enough to miss out.
My coat has nine buttons, but I always fascinate.

While bored a few years back i stumbled into Superfuture's seedy underworld (ie everything but superdenim) and noticed a thread which had just been bumped "IDM Saved my Life" or something along those lines. What the flips IDM? thought I... I had a hunch it was either a new recreational drug or something akin to Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
I clicked and some dude was discussing Autechre (what the flip!) so i broogled IDM and (you probably don't need me to tell you) it stands for 'Intelligent Dance Music' What an absolutely fucking awful choice of words, its not even genre specific.
Ive even surprised myself... Ive been listening to electronic music in one form or another for most of my life and never come across this term before.. Please don't let it just be me?

Who the heck coined it and when? (it was an old thread) Electronica, brakecore, dub techno, breakbeat, experimental house, acid, disco, drone, minimal wave, ambient...? Nope, its the genre encompassing IDM, Yuck, ive offended myself just typing it.

edit- answering my own question

Maybe I should start an ‘Unpopular Opinions’ thread.
