I always thought that the steam shovel was a good model for how things in general should look.

Rivet Head,
Great find, I love that steam crane. (Also great Rivet-head blogspot - I have been following it for a number of years!)
I hope you don't mind me adding the kodachrome picture below in the same theme, entitled "Workers leaving Pennsylvania shipyards, 1943"

Fascinating film and the photo as well. Even more interesting is the fact that the photo is in color. In the photo, notice the variety in workwear? Not many wearing hardhats, though, and none of the miners were. It looks like about one in five or six are wearing bib overalls. Can't tell what kind of pants the others are wearing. By the time they get off work, all the clothes looks pretty non-descript. It was probably a warm day, too.

The miners, on the other hand, would be working in an environment (if they worked underground) that was a constant temperature all year round. But a true miner only works underground, or so they believe. I noticed a few wearing rubber boots, which I was not aware they ever wore, but water can be a problem in a mine. They all were carrying those distinctive round lunch (and water) pails, too. Sometimes, in very old photos, workers might be wearing old suit jackets.
