My first tender post on this forum, brilliant thread - so much inspirational stuff on here, thank you!

I'd thought I would try & contribute some imagery I used for a museum commission a while back.
All are bona fide criminal mugshots from the Manchester, England around 1900's.

Hope they will be of some interest.

Good stuff canhoto.  Nice to see some Brit stuff to compare to our American cousins (ls that a young Paul McCartney - bottom left?)

brilliant first post canhoto, have you got anymore photos? or any of the history regarding the crimes these folks committed. One things for sure the Mancunian criminal of yore is far better turned out than the present day man about town.

Thank you, I do have some more imagery but scant little on the crimes (I was given just a folder full of images taken from the police archives) except I might have something on the judge who presided on these miserable folk!

It's funny how people have doppelgangers throughout time, good spot!

I'll post some more up soon & thanks for the warm welcome Smile

I read a book recently by J.P.Bean called the Sheffield Gang Wars a factual account of gang warfare in Sheffield in the 1920,s (dubbed Britain's little Chicago) and the gang breakers employed to suppress the mobsters which led to the formation of the flying squad. Made even more interesting for me because i know all the locations in the old photographs.

Does hit home when it's just on the doorstep!

Judge Thomas Batty Addison, I couldn't find much about online unfortunately, although from what I was told he was a real fire & brimstone judge. Often handing out huge sentences for minor offences.

The rest of the collection

Woah! What a great collection - love the Victorian street scenes especially, great detail.
Illustrates very well the vast array of hats available for men 100+ years ago.

Super, thanks for posting thesw great photos. The shot of the farmer on the combine in his overalls and salt n pepper work shirt is so sharp and clear. It's so cool to see how they used to attached the pocket watch to their overalls using what looks like an old leather boot lace.
