In those days, apparently the collar button was always buttoned.

not workwear in working practice but in a Swiss countercultural milieu...
the 'halbstarke' [rebels] shot by Karlheinz Weinberger from late 50s onwards... a photo practice mostly renowned for the recording of some outlandish additions to the denim... a quick drop over to here will show a wider range... ttps://www.americansuburbx.com/2011/11/karlheinz-weinberger-photos-1954-1995.html [cliff richard belt is my fave... ] but for now: the women of the halbstarke and their denim steez... [lee seemed to be a firm favourite...] and then for jollies... more bottle tops... |

The funny thing about rebels and other nonconformists is how they all seem to wear a uniform, as if wearing anything else would betray your roots, if you had any. It's not easy to be different but at least it requires no thought.

I beg to differ, BlueTrain. Though the denim is a type of uniform, meant to signal tribal affinity, it is also a carefully selected canvas that has been "painted" by accessories. Herein can be found the statement of individuality and a whole lot of thought went into making it. Both the denim and the wacky ornamentation are particularly brave choices for the women in these shots when you think about just how overtly feminine their mainstream fashion options were at the time. My two cent contribution made with a currency of ever-declining value...

Didn't mean to imply that my comments had anything especially to do with denim.

Concerning how overtly feminine mainstream fashion options were, I was just wondering how feminine the few female acquaintances I had at the time actually were. I honest don't remember but being a guy, I never noticed the fashions. Merely being female was sufficient.
One thing I do remember, though, was that blue jeans were allowed in grade school but not in secondary schools. One loophole, however, was that jeans could be worn. They just couldn't be blue denim. That was when wheat jeans were in style. One fellow always wore them and when I saw him at our 50th high school reunion, he was still wearing wheat jeans. He looked unchanged.
