![]() what was the purpose of wearing the belt buckle to the side like this guy... just to keep it out of the way??

Look how close the belt loops are in the front, and how big the buckle appears to be. No room for his belt buckle to fit between the loops, and it's probably the only belt and pants he owns.

I always thought the buckle-to-the-side thing was to make it more comfortable when you're doing things that require a lot of bending.

I think it had more to do with spacing. However, there are a lot of side-zip and side button homemade clothing items I've found from Depression era, so it may just be a habit after wearing a different model. Could have also been the 'fad' of the day to differentiate one's self from every other work shirt, jean wearing, boot totin' fool.

I hadn't noticed the belt loop spacing, that seems the most likely reason ..although I guess you can't rule out style.
I'm just thinking that with a button fly that set-up could be a bit tricky when nature calls

Others have asked that question before. I like to think that it is because there wearer of the side slung buckle spare time when not posing for photos is spent playing an expensive guitar and he is trying to avoid buckle rash, or he has a fine old car that he spends a lot of time leaning over fender wells into the engine and doesn't want to scratch the paint. All speculation of course ;-)

I have to go with illumin8em's answer on this...although I would bet it started as means to avoid scratching something you like, but caught on as a fashion trend.
