I only meant it was a pain to wear a collar and tie with a detachable collar. In fact, it isn't all that easy to wear a collar and tie even if the collar is attached.
 
Once upon a time, shirts for evening wear (white tie) might be made of very thin muslin but with a plain (or fancy) linen front, always stiffly starched, and with the shirt fastening in the back and naturally with a detachable collar. Presumably you had a servant help you get dressed. They might also be worn with a vest that only had a front and sometimes the shirt only had a front, too. Old comedy movies sometimes showed the shirt front rolling up. And if the man were in a fight or otherwise messed up, the collar would be shown sticking out.
 
Remember when shirts with button down collars had a button in the back, too?
