Sorry for the late comment but those German language pages are interesting, if rather difficult to read. It's the Gothic script more than anything. Modern day Germans supposedly even find it difficult to read, even though it was still commonly used into the 1940s.
German was widely spoken in this country at one time and even the Declaration of Independence was printed in German at the same time it was printed and published in English. These days, it's still spoken in a few places, although it's a specific dialect of German. Use of German in this country fell off with WWI. There's still Spanish, of course. New World Spanish, they call it.

I have a German deli 3 miles from my house, it’s been open since the 70’s- it’s still open, but the original German owner
Sold the business 2 years back...More often than not, you would see old German folks- speaking in their native tongue to the owner...Like you said- it’s going away in this country, except for the few pockets here and there. |
