So I have too many boots and would like to experiment. As the topic says I’d like to dye or paint a pair of brown boots black, but not permanently. Anyone done this? Tips, advice?

Thanks,

Dean

Hi. John V., the nice fellow behind Vintage Engineer Boots did something like this to his Road Champs in 2013. You might want to ask him directly about his experience.

Here's a reference to John's experiment from his blog: http://vintageengineerboots.blogspot.com/2013/09/reader-mail_26.html

Argh, that post leaves out the actual dyeing part.  I'll try to get in touch with him.

John at VEB's experiment is the first that came to mind!

I've toyed with this idea in the past too and watched a bunch of YouTube videos on it, like this:

If for whatever reason going the DIY route doesn't bear fruit, cobblers and leather workers can often do this for a fee too.

If you don't want to try this yourself / have a really nice pair of boots you'd like someone else to dye - there's a whole subcommunity of folks called 'blootblacks' who do various patinas, dyes, shines, modifications, etc to boots, with regularly held contests. They're also known as patina artists which really does describe the work better, there's some very talented folks out there. There is a big crossover into the leather/fetish community just to give ya a heads up (and let you know you've found the right folks).

There's a lady in San Francisco who organizes these types of events and also is a bootblacker, I'm sure she'd love to give your boots a try. You can find her on IG @bootblacksf. There's probably folks who do this local to ya too. They will probably be able to do a better job than a local cobbler who doesn't regularly do this type of dyeing.

That’s some interesting info there, another subculture I wasn’t aware of. Thanks!
