I know what you are saying, 00, but surely these guys could, nowadays, sell direct via the web?

Yes, it has probably never been their way of selling, but 30 years ago nobody sold stuff online - now it is killing the High St.

There are any number of would be t'interweb tycoons out there, if only they could find a unique product to sell.

Yet here is a company with a truly unique artisan product, and they are giving all their value away to Al-Fayed!!

As we say in Yorkshire - Fuck that for a game of darts...

Surely, with help, these folks could do SO much better for themselves....

I don't think Al Fayed owns Harrods nowadays..

I only meant fuck'all compared to London retail... the older dude is 80+ years old, he owns the building where they work its next to Kelham Island hipster-town so that must be worth close to a million quid, he has a large house in Derbyshire and drives a brand new Jag.

They do have an internet shop, they also have a factory shop where they retail their lower end product, folks just don't buy 60 piece silver dinner services anymore.
The main market for silverware isn't the general public its folks who don't actually shop, yacht owners, country manor banqueting, cruise liners, highfalutin London dinner party types, Chinese businessmen, bankers, oligarch's and the like, so most of their sales are mto done through middle-men armed with their posh catalogue (they make a large mark up)
What's sold in Harrods is generally for folks who have a 60 piece silver dinner service and need replacements.

Years ago they used to employ 15 people but they are the last of their kind following in family traditions, their kids are in tech, his 14 year old grandson shot the film, they'll not be filling down braze anytime in the future..

Yeah they're doing alright, they're just in a position whereas to modernise means loosing the artistry and they're too old to recoup any of the costs involved.
When i was a young'un folks used to get a canteen of cutlery for a wedding gift albeit electro-plated or in my folks instance stainless, failing that you could win one on Bullseye or The Price is Right, i suppose they've just gone out of fashion apart from the very high end of the market where they're still used for pomp and ceremony.

They also run another business from their premises called Soldering Solutions offering a consultancy service.
They braze wingnuts onto threaded bar for me foc, i was in their foyer one time waiting for said brazing and heard them say to a customer "Weld!, can we weld...? We could weld rabbit shit onto your Mothers best dinning table" LOL as you say.. only in Yorkshire.
