Hi
I’m new here but hope someone can help, tried searching the forum but nothing came up. I’ve recently come across a pair of black 551’s and the material is just amazing. Apparently 551s were made in corduroy a lot too. It’s very soft and supple, thick without being stiff like raw denim. Easiest way to describe it would probably be corduroy without the ridges. My pair was made for the European market, produced in Tunisia. Now my question - does anyone know this material? And was it ever made into 501s? if yes, where and how would I start looking for them? I suppose they’re late 90s but I honestly don’t know. Im not a fan of getting stuff retailored but I really like older 501s. |

Interesting that you mention this. I recently bought a pair of 501's, appeared "overdyed" indigo, and in the back panel and backing both front pockets, WAS SASHIKO fabric....it looks so perfect that it HAD to come from the factory. I have searched all over and cannot find ANYTHING ABOUT IT ON THE NET.
I'll post pics in the next response. These were made in China, and I bought them at a Mexican Flea Market in Oklahoma City.....i'm simply befuddled and blown away. My daughter is a denimhead/early collector, and even she cannot find out anything. It also has indonesian tags (Levis, Indonesia-and Levis Mexico, SA on the factory tags in the jeans). You can tell they've never been worn either, or if so, almost never worn. Strangest thing ever.....OH, AND 15.00. JD Tulsa, OK |
