I wonder if the artwork for the men's boots and shoes in those early Sears catalogs was distorted, because some of them look bizarre. But they sure had a huge variety.

I also note that tennis shoes have been around for a really long time and that Romeo shoes are still available almost unchanged. One of my uncles always wore Romeo shoes around the house. When we went camping, he wore those thick canvas shoes with a thick sole (not a tennis shoe) that no longer seem to be available. Didn't see any of them in any of the catalog illustrations.

Remember "putter pants" from Sears?

You have a few years on me Blue train, I don't remember putter pants- Ill look for those canvas shoes your talking about, maybe the 1952 sears catalog will have them?

So-called putter pants were simple, lightweight pants that a man might wear around the house on weekends. They had an elastic waist and, I think, patch pockets on the front. I don't know it that was the catalog name or not or if they were exclusively Sears but probably not. Decidedly a 1950s thing, just like pipe smoking, tail fins and cocktails.

I’m still on the hunt for a good shawl collar shaker knit sweater like those Sansome; there are various versions out there but they either miss the mark or they’re made in China.
