As the title states, why?
Why are you here? Why do you dress the way you dress? Let's consider this a thread to write long form about why we care about clothes the way we do. I'll do my best to start it off. I think for me , for as long as I can remember I've aspired to a uniform and the idea of minimalism, but am incapable of it. I have admitted to many that the reason i don't own (pick your grail garment) is because i'd rather own 800 items that cost $1, than 1 item that cost $ 800. That's an exaggeration of course but I do thrift every chance I get, and balk at the cost of most garments in actual retail establishments. I like the idea of the clothing I am wearing to have a story, or a life before me. I feel like older clothing was constructed better and is of higher quality than current offerings. I also like the egalitarian nature of levis , and wards/penneys /sears... et al. There is probably some mild patriotism in garments that were made in the US also. I feel some mild pride when i am able to compose an outfit of entirely American made garments. I am less guilty of it now than in the past, but there was a bit of 'better than' mentality with regards to my wardrobe. By that I mean I felt as though my jeans were somehow better than the jeans of others. Or that somehow i was a better consumer because of this or that. That's largely fallen by the wayside I feel. I guess to a certain extent i still feel that way, but don't express it in a braggadocious way. I guess what I mean is, it matters to me that Roy drafted, cut, and sewed my jeans ... but i don't expect that to matter to other people. I know my wife could care less about the clothes I wear usually. I brought home Big E levis from the thrift , and i believe her response was 'ohh that's nice dear.' I get that its really idiosyncratic. Most people don't know/care about where their garments were made. There is the whole 'may as well have the best' from filson... or 'own fewer ,better things ' from our friends at standard and strange ... I want to get there , but I am too busy figuring out what the best things are to arrive at the the 'fewer' ... so i guess 'why' for me is that i feel there are things about the garments which make them better, or more appealing to me. bob dale |

Great start and concept for a thread Bob.
I think my love of denim spurs from my mildly-rebellious youth. I grew up near Atlanta, GA and it tends to be hot and sticky in the summers. My mom always made me wear shorts when I wanted to look cool and wear jeans. Now I choose to wear jeans year round. Doesn't matter that it's 110 degree out, I still make myself suffer through the Texas summers. But what I really like about some of the well made clothes that we wear around here is that they can be very understated without drawing attention from anyone else. I like knowing that my jeans, shirts, jackets, boots, whatever hopefully are making a living wage. I like knowing that the one wo/man brands that I support love what they do. And I like not drawing too much attention to myself either. I don't need people to know how much I spent on a pair of jeans, I just enjoy wearing them and seeing how they age.

i can't take any credit for this thread . I believe it was hollows' who originated it prior to the tidying. I always liked the thread and would return to it often to see how my thoughts , and the thoughts of others had changed or evolved.
