I would try a drill press with a light touch to just eat through those fingers that are holding the button on.

you can also try pounding a nail set through the middle as long as the rivet behind it has a hole to fall into.  Maybe place it over a large nut .

I've always used a wire cutter, if you go low on the front side, the blades tend to slide right under the button and clip it nicely.
I make things out of leather.
