IMO the best bang-for-the-buck for a well-made, vintage-style flat toebox engineer boot is Wesco's Boss 7400. It does have the taller heel stack (logger/cuban heel) rather than a shorter heel stack (block heel). Wesco also have a 'scratch and dent' section on their website where they sell irregular boots, you're looking for a Boss with the MP toe, or Morrison boot, the prices are very good. Wesco's MP toe engineer boot is harder to find on the used market but some do turn up occasionally. Important detail on sizing with the MP toe - it runs narrow, E width fits like a standard D width.
Sub-$500 pricing - Red Wing's 2966 Black Klondike boot has a larger toebox but it flattens out over time. The heel stack is a plastic composite meant to look like leather, which is my only issue with the boot. But you can have that replaced by a competent cobbler. Other than that - Chippewa makes some decent engineers at an entry level price point, I've seen a few come through the shop on customer's feet and while they weren't the nicest in terms of construction or fit/finish, I felt they were a solid value for what you pay for 'em. White's Nomad is also another good option although I'm not sure if the toebox is to your liking. I'd avoid Frye and anything that sells at MSRP (not on sale) for $300 or below. Making a proper pair of boots is just plain costly and once prices start to go below $300 you're looking at a lot of shortcuts in manufacturing and they're not worth your money or the pleasure of you wearing and kicking the crap out of 'em. |
