The evidence of chainstitch and redlines suggest 1927/8 onward until 1936, when the red tab/hidden rivet model became the standard.
Also has bartacking under the exposed back pocket rivets, a feature that seems to be more 1930's going by other pairs/images of.. l've seen.

I know pairs made in the first half of the 1920's have plain fly buttons and concave suspender and top button. Also the flattened as well as dimpled rivets.
This pair could be from 1928 or 1935, who knows for sure?

Well done Dr. and thanks for sharing.
It´s simple nice to see, how close the current 33 repros get to the originals, the red ine that is just not in the middle of the white selvage, the back pockets which slipped a bit to far to the sides, that reminds me of the unflattering Lee bottom styles... good job LVC! ....if only the denim would come so close.Cry

I wondered about the flat- non concave buttons- would you say that these were the buttons that went on and on- were these the last change to the buttons- or is there another after these?

There are a few subtle font changes between 1930's and the 1960's, but yeah basically it remained the same. Not sure when they came in - late 1920's?

Have now seen several pairs of 1901-1913 501's on various sites/in reference books, with a 'Solide' buckle on the cinch. The pairs from around the 1890's have the earlier plain wire buckles, so lm assuming the change in buckle type/suppliers must have been around 1900?

Sansome? Could you help me out here?

Still no hard data- but I suspect Levi added a back pocket- as early as 1899

Thanks for the help with the buckle.
I hope to get back to the discussion on the 1922-36 era 501's after seeing those 1930's pair from Greeperfierce.

So 1899 is the possible date for the additional back pocket? At least Mr. Strauss was alive to see the improvement?

It's possible- the 1901 catalog lists 2 hip pockets- catalog was put together in 1900- so we can assume in 1900- they had 2 hip pockets- what we're looking for is a #2 with a type 4 two horse brand.....we know type 5 two horse brand appears in 1900 and a type 4 2 horse brand was still being used in December 1898......mining in the west is really weak in the late 1890's- so 1897-1900 can be found in just a handful of spots.
