Can you explain to me why hammered down is not "proper"? That's an HTC belt right? I would happily go ACE but none of their designs do it for me for some reason, almost too repro. I like HTC designs a lot better.

It's proper because it doesn't damage the leather and for the same reason that a chainstitch hem on a pair of repro 501s is proper: that's how it was done when originally made.

Yes it's the backside of this HTC X WH "Duckdigger" Belt:

... and of course: There's no accounting for taste Wink

Both HTC and ACE are using a foot machine to put their studs in. The HTC has a much thicker piece of leather and therefore has less stud curled over than the ACE belt. Proper, not proper is irrelevant....all depends on the thickness of the leather. The ACE is likely made with 7oz leather while the HTC looks like 10oz. ACE could also be using studs with longer prongs and thicker leather. In all honesty, the belt will catch less if the prongs are flatter. Does no damage to the leather either way.

ACE makes to the T reproductions of vintage belts. HTC does a modern take on them. Both are very nice quality.

Of course both are nice quality & both are looking nice on front side... but HTC Belts are looking "unclean" on back side for my liking... and as you pointed out... why HTC doesn't use studs with longer prongs? I belive it's more time-consuming doing back side the ACE way... or in other words... "a save money thing" or "squeeze more profit"... HTC Belts are not cheap.

Of course I would discover this thread not 3 days after I geared up to start making some belts. Wacko

I have to admit, I have been jonesing for some of RRL's take on western belts, but not at $400 or whatever they charge. This last week or so I finally took matters in to my own hands having found some blank horse butt strips and some blank CXL strips I perused eBay for buckles and found the standard rivet company for all of my spot and stone spot needs.

I'm not sure I can put out something as nice as those ACE belts but I'll be sure to share with the bros my finished product when I have something to report on.

Panhead, could you post any evo of your black belts? I'm guessing that eventually it will show brown? Looking into doing a custom ACE order, but want to see how the belt holds up after some wear... my HTC is built like a tank.
